Bachelor of Arts in History

History students at Delta State have a broad understanding of the major events, themes, and developments of American, European, and World History.  Here, students develop an understanding of historiography and the historian’s craft.  This includes the ability to think critically, write persuasively, and analyze historically.  Doing so enables our graduates to gain cross cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives about the past, as well as current events.  All history students conduct original research, which utilizes analysis of primary and secondary sources.  Here are some of our course offerings for next semester.

The History Department Faculty represents a wide array of research and methodological backgrounds.  Our students are able to work closely with the faculty both in the classroom and on individual research projects.  We offer a variety of academic awards for students who excel in the classroom and seek to pursue history education.

Graduates with a BA in History possess strong critical thinking, writing, and communication skills that prepare them for a wide variety of career options.  Our degree program prepares students for a future in historical research, education, government, law, museum curating, as well as library sciences.  Alumni from our program have been placed in positions in these fields throughout the country.

From day one, DSU History students learn to write in a professional, academic style that prepares them for graduate studies.  Whether pursuing post-graduate work in history, other social sciences or humanities, education, or law school, the BA in history will help prepare you for your professional training.

Our MA students are also well prepared for further graduate studies.  Our graduate courses emphasize the necessity for future historians to develop understanding of narrative and historiography; thus our students develop analytical and writing skills that prepare them for careers in teaching and research.

In addition to classes, the History Department sponsors several events and offers various extracurricular activities.  Each spring semester we host the Cranford Lecture in American History.  We also have History Film nights throughout the academic year, which are co-sponsored by the history honorary society, Phi Alpha Theta.  For additional information about our program and History Department events, like “The History Program at Delta State” on Facebook!

Contact a member of the History Faculty if you have questions about our program.  We will be happy to help you find the path that best suits you and help you develop a course of study that suits your interests.
