The Delta Center for Culture and Learning recently welcomed Olympic silver-medalist Elaine Breeden Penrose to the Delta. Penrose is part of the annually hosted group, Robertson Scholars, that receives recognition and support at either Duke University or the University of North Carolina.
The Robertson Scholars are focusing on three projects this year which include the Sunflower Freedom Project, St. Gabriel’s Mercy Center in Mound Bayou, and the Delta Center at Delta State University. Penrose is part of the administrative team that visited Delta State.
Penrose won the silver medal for swimming in the women’s 4x100-meter medley relay. While a student at Stanford University, she won three NCAA national championships in the 200-yard butterfly as well as a championship in the 100-yard butterfly. She holds 24 All-American honors.
Delta State’s Aquatics Center opened in 2001 and is one of the Mid-South’s top swimming and diving competition locations. The Center houses a 60-meter by 25-yard pool with a separate diving well, 2,500 stadium seats, dressing rooms, training areas, offices, and classrooms. It is currently undergoing renovations to enhance the visitor and fan experience.
